The place where the Romans watched in thrilling as violent clashes between gladiators and wild animals became the first burial place and then the castle of the Pope. His blocks of travertine were eventually used for the construction of other buildings in the city center as in the case of Palazzo Barberini. In '700 the original building was now quite compromise, but the first real restoration work began only in 1806 following a strong earthquake that threatened to seriously damage the outermost ring.
